Wyden Votes Against Nominee for Immigration Services

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Ron Wyden, D-Ore., today voted against confirming Lee Francis Cissna to be the director of United States Citizenship and Immigration Services at the Department of Homeland Security.

“I cannot vote for a key architect behind Trump’s awful travel ban, which was designed to satisfy a dangerous far-right wing fantasy and undermine our American values of accepting and encouraging the diversity that makes us stronger. Confirming Mr. Cissna empowers him to implement even more unconstitutional restrictions on people based on religion,” Wyden said.

“As the immigration services director, Mr. Cissna’s responsibility will be to help men, women and children who want to enter our country. I have no confidence he can provide that help, given the administration’s obsessive focus on tearing our communities apart, instead of restoring the strained trust between residents and law enforcement created by the threat of immigration raids hanging over our neighborhoods.”
