Wyden: The Recreation Not Red Tape Act is a Boost for Our Quality of Life and Economy
Wyden highlights his bipartisan recreation bill in an Energy and Natural Resources Committee hearing
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Ron Wyden, D-Ore., a senior member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, today highlighted the importance of protecting recreation opportunities for generations to come during a Committee hearing on his bipartisan Recreation Not Red Tape (RNR) Act.
The RNR Act would streamline the permitting process for guides and recreation enthusiasts, hold federal agencies accountable by making outdoor recreation a priority for the first time and increase volunteerism to address the maintenance backlog on America’s public lands.
Wyden described his bipartisan bill as, “a boost … for our quality of life in the West and for our economy, and a chance to bring Americans together for better health.”
At the hearing, Lee Davis, the Executive Director at Oregon State University’s Outdoor Economy Initiative, testified in support of Wyden’s bill and on the importance of protecting and expanding outdoor recreation opportunities. Mr. Davis’ prepared remarks are available here.
Wyden also raised the urgent need for Congress to address climate change and its impacts as wildfires continue to devastate communities across the West.
“We all know, because we read the paper, about these wildfires that are just ravaging the West,” Wyden said. “And there are a host of issues that we’re going to have to tackle … One of them is climate change.”
