Wyden Statement on Commitments from Chairman Bingaman and Bureau of Reclamation Commissioner Connor for Funding of a Long-term Klamath Basin Solution

Washington, D.C. –U. S. Senator Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) issued the following statement after commitments to pursue funding of a long-term solution for the Klamath Basin’s water issues were agreed to by both Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee Chairman Jeff Bingaman (D-NM) and Bureau of Reclamation Commissioner Michael Connor during a committee hearing today.

“The commitments from the Bureau of Reclamation and Chairman Bingaman are an important step toward finding the funding to support a long-term solution in the Klamath Basin. Their support represents a tremendous help to those who continue to work to solve resource disputes in the region and identify sources of funding to put those solutions into effect.  Without these commitments any funding for a Klamath solution would be stuck behind projects that have been in progress for years, sometimes decades.  There is still a great deal of work that needs to be done to secure the funding for an agreement that has the full support of stakeholders and I will continue to work to ensure that goal is achieved.
