Wyden, Merkley Announce over $7 million in Recovery Act Funding to Improve Water System in Sutherlin
Washington, D.C. – Oregon’s U.S. Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley announced today that the U.S. Department of Agriculture has awarded more than $7 million to improve the water system in Sutherlin, Oregon. The Recovery Act funding will go toward improving the health, sanitation and infrastructure of the water system, and help protect the local environment from contamination.
“This funding is an investment in rural America that will improve water system infrastructure and give folks in Sutherlin the peace of mind that comes with clean, safe drinking water,” said Wyden. ”In the process, it will also create much-needed jobs in rural Oregon.”
“The public health and well-being of Oregon’s communities is extremely important,” said Merkley. “These funds will enable the City of Sutherlin to make essential improvements to their water system, and ensure that Oregon families have access to clean, safe drinking water.”
“The City of Sutherlin is grateful to Senators Merkley and Wyden for their help in securing these funds,” said Sutherlin Mayor Stan McKnight. “This project is very difficult for any community to afford. The grant and low interest loan provided by the Recovery Act will help Sutherlin restore our water system and comply with clean water regulations.”
The City of Sutherlin will receive a Recovery Act loan and grant totaling $7,340,450 to make necessary improvements to the water system and ensure the delivery of safe drinking water to their community. This project is part of the Obama Administration’s plan to provide reliable services in rural America and further economic recovery by supporting job creation through economic development initiatives.
