Wyden, Merkley: $750,000 in Legal Assistance to Help Immigrant and Refugee Survivors of Domestic Violence in Oregon
Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization (IRCO) to Receive Federal Funds to help survivors in Multnomah, Clackamas and Washington counties
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley today announced that Multnomah, Clackamas, and Washington counties will receive $750,000 for legal assistance to aid immigrant and refugee survivors of domestic violence.
“Survivors of domestic violence deserve access to comprehensive legal services for legal matters arising out of that violence,” Wyden said. “This grant will provide much needed legal assistance to immigrant and refugee survivors of domestic violence in the tri-county area, and I’ll keep fighting to ensure survivors in our state and nationwide have the resources they need to heal and live healthy fulfilling lives.”
“Immigrants and refugees often face many challenges as they transition to life in Oregon. For those who are survivors of domestic violence, these challenges may feel insurmountable,” said Senator Merkley. “This funding from DOJ will allow IRCO to continue doing the critical work of providing legal services to these survivors, and helping folks lead safe, fulfilling lives in Oregon.”
This grant fund comes from the Department of Justice’s Legal Assistance for Victims Program, which awards grants to increase the availability of civil and criminal legal assistance needed to help adult and youth victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking.
