Portland, OR Applications used on smart phones, Facebook and other mobile devices are an important part of the 21st Century and, as a result, the Pacific Northwest economy. Application development companies in Oregon and Washington are pushing the boundaries of technology and propelling economic growth in the region.

Senators Ron Wyden of Oregon and Maria Cantwell of Washington will host a forum on Friday, June 1, 2012, of local developers to discuss the state of the industry and what can be done to help it grow and create jobs. Attending the forum will be more than 30 of the region’s top app developers from Portland and Southwest Washington. Wyden and Cantwell will focus on seizing the economic opportunity for Pacific Northwest job growth around the growing app economy.

The “app economy” has grown from virtually zero jobs in 2007 to support more than 400,000 jobs nationwide, according to a February 2012 study. Both the Portland-Vancouver-Beaverton metro area and the Seattle metro area are among the top 15 app economy hubs in the country.
