Merkley, Wyden: Over $4 Million Headed to Portland Public Schools for its COVID-19 Response
Washington, D.C. – Today, Oregon’s U.S. Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden announced that Portland Public Schools will receive a total of $4,012,792.40 in funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for its response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“As Oregon continues its recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, this FEMA support will help Portland Public Schools with efforts to keep kids safe and healthy throughout the school year,” said Merkley. “With new COVID strains still circulating and predictions of a rough flu season, this funding will help these schools continue to recover, stay open, and serve our children.”
“Like all Oregon school districts, our state’s largest district in Portland got hit hard by COVID and the unprecedented challenges created by this public health crisis,” Wyden said. “These federal resources will help students, teachers and staff in PPS stay healthy so schools can remain open for children to learn in a safe environment.”
In order to eliminate or lessen the spread of COVID-19 among students and staff, Portland Public Schools provided 93 schools and facilities with 6,289 air purifiers and 1,089 replacement filters in direct response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This award is intended to assist Portland Public Schools with their emergency response to the public health crisis.
