Merkley, Wyden Announce $15.5 Million Expansion Investment in Medford Roadway
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Oregon’s U.S. Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden today announced $15.5 million in federal funding for a critical roadside expansion project along the Foothill Road/North Phoenix Road Corridor in Medford.
“Oregon’s drivers, cyclists and pedestrians rely on the quality of our roadways to safely get from point A to point B,” Merkley said. “That’s why BUILD grants and the safety infrastructure improvements they make bring couldn’t be more important. I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to work with local leaders and federal officials to secure this funding, so we can give Medford the 21st century infrastructure it deserves, while creating valuable jobs for Oregonians.”
“This federal investment in Medford will help to reduce congestion on I-5 and make this crucial corridor safer for residents to drive, bike and walk,” Wyden said. “I am proud to have teamed up with local officials to work on getting these key resources that will generate jobs in southern Oregon while building a better infrastructure in Medford.”
“This project will add multi-modal transportation upgrades to a key corridor, reducing congestion while also creating jobs and improving quality of life,” said Brian Sjothun, City Manager of Medford. “We thank Senator Merkley for advocating for this project to Secretary Chao on behalf of Medford. And we thank both of our senators for their partnership in working to improve infrastructure in our region.”
The funding is administered by the Department of Transportation’s Better Utilizing Investment to Leverage Development (BUILD) grant program, and will expand nearly four miles of roadway with two additional lanes, a center turn lane, sidewalks, and bike lanes.
