Wyden Statement on Confirmation of Judge Simon to U.S. District Court

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) issued the following statement congratulating Judge Michael Simon on his confirmation as a U.S. District Court Judge for the District of Oregon. Simon was confirmed by the Senate this afternoon by a vote of 64 to 35:

“It was my pleasure to propose Judge Simon for the District Court seat he will now hold and I am grateful that the U.S. Senate agreed with my assessment of Judge Simon’s impeccable attributes. Over the years, Judge Simon has shown himself to be a fair and thoughtful man who will bring years of diverse legal expertise to the court. As a litigator for the Department of Justice, Michael made huge contributions in strengthening consumer protection law – notably in the case of United States v. American Airlines where he successfully argued for extending protections against monopolization and attempted monopolization. His abilities in court are only matched by his work in the community having served as president of Congregation Beth Israel in Portland and having volunteered for such important community causes as the Waverly Children’s Home and the Classroom Law Project.

The position Judge Simon will fill has been vacant for two years and has represented a judicial emergency. I am certain that the U.S. Senate has found a superior jurist in Judge Simon and I look forward to him continuing to serve the people of Oregon as a District Court judge.”
